If cognac was born to travel, it is because the delicate wine of the Charente couldn’t stand the trip. To improve it, the Dutch started distilling it into brandewijn, the ‘burnt wine’ which gave its name to brandy, and drank it with water. Once this brandy was distilled a second time, which concentrated its aromas, cognac was born. In this guise, the precious bottles could withstand long journeys aboard the merchant ships that carried it all over the world, bringing back spices and precious woods from their far-flung destinations. Caravelle Épicée tells the story of this historic link between cognac and the maritime Spice Road opened by the caravels of the Age of Exploration. It conjures the wooden flanks of ships steeped with the aromas of their exotic cargo, faraway markets and boxes bursting with spices that were once worth the price of gold… Nutmeg and patchouli from Indonesia; pepper and sandalwood from India; pimiento, tobacco and gaiac wood from the Americas… Caravelle Épicée captures the quintessence of the treasures of the Old and New Worlds, on a sensuous amber backdrop. An ode to spices composed by Jeanne-Marie Faugier.
